Alumni Spotlight #1

by Cody Ortega

With college baseball underway, we are proud to bring back our “Alumni Spotlight” series.
This series highlights standout performances from our former New England Scorpions players at their current colleges and universities.

In the past six years, we have had 70 New England Scorpions players commit to play college baseball. These players attend over 40 institutions across the country. We are proud of every player and look forward to following their hard work each week.

This week‘s spotlight belongs to three former players:

1. Caleb Leys
- LHP: University of Maine (Fr.)

*** Caleb Leys is a 2021 graduate from Middletown HS. Caleb played 4 years with the NE Scorps and committed to the University of Maine through the Scorpions program. Typically a true freshman would never get the opportunity to pitch against “Power 5” schools, but Caleb is not your typical freshman. Leys has made two appearances for the Black Bears, throwing in relief against LSU and making his first collegiate start against Penn State University. His stat line against LSU was 3.2IP-1R-4K-2BB while topping out at 91mph multiple times. Caleb’s stat line against PSU was 5.1IP-2R-7K-1BB helping UMAINE earn the Win. Not bad for a true freshman!

2. Ben Sears
- RHP: University of Houston (Jr.)

*** Ben Sears is a 2018 graduate from East Providence HS. He played 4 years with the NE Scorps and committed to the University of Houston through the Scorpions program. Ben is off to a great start in his 22’ college campaign. Sears has appeared in 4 games and is 2-0 on the mound while also recording one save. He has not allowed one run in his four appearances. His best performance stat line was against McNeese Univeristy:
(4IP-0R-7K-0BB) and touching 94mph multiple times.

3. Blaine Lidsky (Jr.)
- Catcher / OF: Stonehill College

*** Blaine Lidsky is a 2019 graduate from South Kingstown HS. He played 3 years with the NE Scorps and committed to Stonehill College through the Scorpions program. In five games this season, Lidsky is batting .353 with an OBP of .421 and a Slug % of .824. In 19 Plate Appearances he has:
2 Home Runs - 4 RBI - 2 Doubles - 5 Runs. It’s safe to say Lidsky is having a great start to the 22’ season!

Congrats to these three young men on being named to the the first Alumni Spotlight for the 22’ collegiate season. Check back each week for more Scorpions dominating on the diamond!
